Holding in a cradle position:

Lay your baby flat (straight) in the pouch at your front. Since a young baby’s head is not yet stable, this cradle position is ideal. Place your baby across the (fiber) lines of the cloth. When you position the baby parallel to the lines of the cloth, the baby may lean towards the side of the cloth; this makes it unstable and dangerous. Placing the baby across the lines of the cloth allows you to lay your baby straight, not awkwardly bent.

When the baby is very small, you have the option of first wrapping him or her in a towel. Or, instead of a towel, you may use the tail end of the cloth to wrap the baby. Fold the bath towel in half and put it on a flat space, then lay the baby diagonally across the towel. Next, grab the corners of the towel on the baby’s right and left side and wrap material around baby. If you wear P-sling on your left shoulder, you would support your baby with your right hand. Place your baby’s head on the inside of your right elbow and hold up either the legs or buttocks and bring the baby to your chest.

Then grab the outside side of the pouch, the side farthest away from your belly. Pull it outward so that the baby can be properly placed in the center of the pouch. Adjust your baby carefully in the pouch. Then baby’s head should be on your right-hand side. Now you are holding your baby correctly. When you look down on your baby, it may seem that the baby’s head is down. But look in the mirror to confirm that his head is actually several inches higher than where his buttocks are, and he is lying straight. If your baby’s head truly is down, lower the rings below left shoulder. You may also pull the tail cloth a bit by baby’s-head side, then his head position will also automatically adjust with the P-sling. Check the mirror again as you do this. When you are looking down on the baby, you may not realize that you are pulling the tail too much and he become crowded because his head goes too high up in the now-reduced pouch. Most inquiries we receive claiming the baby looks uncomfortable are because the tail on the baby’s head side was pulled too much.

Step 1 - When you hold the pouch in a cradling position, first you spread the pouch surface from the inside from right to left with the backs of your hands to smooth out the cloth. When you wear P-sling on your left shoulder, grasp the cloth surface that is closest to your belly with left hand, then grasp the outside of the cloth with your right hand. You do not spread the pouch front and back (vertically), but right and left so it spreads across your body.

Steps 2-5 - After you spread the pouch right and left, you put the baby in across your body.

TIP: When holding your baby in a cradle position, first lay the baby down on a bed or sofa and then take off your P-sling. After removing P-sling, you may drape the tail section over the baby.
